Last week’s win in the Sooruz Lacanau Six Star Pro propelled 19-year-old South African surfing superstar Jordy Smith past the 11 500-point mark in the World Qualifying Series, guaranteeing the teenager a place alongside surfing’s elite next season; there’s no stopping Smith, however, who’s taken up where he left off last week - and in no uncertain style.
Smith needed a mere two minutes to pick up 9.77 (out of ten) from the judges on his first wave at the Rip Curl Pro Super Series in Seignosse, France, en route to a place in round three of the competition. Big things have been anticipated for Smith for some time, and the kid from Durban isn’t disappointing - nor is he letting his achievements go to his head.
“I am so happy that I have already booked my spot on next year’s World Tour, but I still want to continue doing well for the rest of the year,” Smith’s response after his stellar start in France. “I try not to pay too much attention to ratings, I focus on my surfing and my performance, and believe if I have fun in my heat I’ll be able to make it every time.” An admirable philosophy from Jordy Smith - and the longest a surfer has ever spoken without using the word ’stoked’.
