‘Kelvin’ Sheel stars in rookie year

The Pinelands Mighty Dodos - backed by online media giant Feverpitcher - are nearing the end of what could prove to be a monumental season. With just a handful of games left for Cape Town’s celebrity hockey outfit, the Dodos lead the league by three points, boosted by a weekend victory over Western Province Cricket Club that was inspired by rookie Dodo Andrew ‘Kelvin’ Sheel.

Sheel - ‘Kelvin’ short for Kelvinator, a reference to the occasion he got home with a dead phone and no alarm clock, and dragged his stove into his bedroom and set the timer to ensure he was up for work the next day - is enjoying a stellar season for his new team, and while he’s largely unintelligible to his team-mates, he’s been part of a team that can almost touch the league title.

But there are some big clashes still to come, not least amongst them an away fixture to Durbanville (the team bus left on Monday morning for a Tuesday night game), veteran Dodo Alice Dabrowski leading the team in a crucial game. A crowd of over a dozen is anticpated for the game, and the local community paper promised to send a reporter, suggesting more blanket media coverage for the Dodos; fans across the planet will be in Durbanville in spirit on Tuesday night. And that’s devotion.
