Tiger Woods destroys another field

National pride fought with a sense of the inevitable as Sunday’s final round of the WGC Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio: Rory Sabbatini might have led by one shot with 18 holes to play, but when Tiger Woods is the man lying in second, it’s hard not to feel more than a little nervous for your fellow countrymen…

…and so it proved, a controlled display of aggresive golf the antithesis of Sabbatini’s final day blues, as Woods romped home by eight shots. A share of second (with Justin Rose) might have bumped Sabbatini up the world rankings, but that’ll be scant consolation for the South African, the latest player to be blown away by a Woods assault.

That made it three in a row for the second time at the same tournament for the world number one, just another statistic he’s the first to chalk up; it’s a surprise that the bookies are even taking bets on Tiger for this week’s PGA Championship. The scale of the win at the Bridgestone underlines the overwhelming favourite status Woods takes into Southern Hills, where’s he looking for yet another Major (and his fourth PGA Championship); Feverpitcher can’t, in all honesty, see a particularly good reason to bet against The Striped One. That said, go Ernie, Goose, Trevor, Tim, Sabba…
