Do the Dudek? Not any more

Liverpool fans still get a dreamy look whenever they remember that magical night in Istanbul in 2005 (a memory that makes an appearance several times a day). The comeback, the penalty shoot-out, lifting the trophy - all now firmly engraved in Anfield folklore. And then there was the dance craze that briefly flickered through Europe - anyone remember ‘Doing the Dudek’ in the small hours of the morning?

The dance, and its accompanying song, made for a delightfully tacky tribute to the knee-knocking display Dudek produced prior to starring in the penalty shoot-out that won Liverpool the Champions League. Both were equally bad; both were equally popular for a fleeting time, before their novelty value wore off. And now, the final link to ‘Doing the Dudek’ is gone, the Polish ‘keeper having signed for Real Madrid.

Feverpitcher has spent the morning ‘Doing the Dudek’ in the office by way of farewell and tribute to Jerzy; the choreography may give the impression of being placed in contact with a rather powerful electric fence, but it’s still a dance we remember fondly. Do one yourself, when you have a moment; and to get you in the mood, the opening lines of the accompanying song. One last time, then, for Jerzy: Come and and do the Dudek…

Come on and do the Dudek
Do the Jerzy Dudek
Shake it, shake it, move it
Jump up and wave your gloves!

We’re the one and only
Euro Campione
Who get to keep the trophy
The rest aint good enough!

One night in Turkey
Some lads from the Mersey
They never gave up the fight

We went bananas
Sons and their fathers
As they set the city alight

Oh-oh-eeay-oh… eeay-oh
Carragher’s brilliant advice
Oh-oh-eeay-oh… eay-oh
Eeeay-oh-oh-oh

Come on and do the Dudek…
