Top three finish for Feverpitcher

Test match fever, Luke Watson, the World Cup… Rugby’s been getting plenty of attention of late, but the Absa Currie Cup has kept largely under the radar - until now. The competition got its official kick-off in Jo’burg on Thursday night, Highveld Radio and former CNN sports anchor Graeme Joffe hosting a Currie Cup quiz that saw the Boland Kavaliers team - featuring Feverpitcher’s Dan Nicholl - finish third out of the 20 teams on show.

Also featuring Megapro’s Monde Tabata, veteran rugby writer Liam del Carme, Absa’s Louis van Zeuner, and Lions fan Matt Ellenbogen (who’d changed out of his red and white jersey and whiskers in time for this photo), the Boland team finished just behind the second-placed Sharks, with KZN coach Dick Muir at the helm (but journos Craig Ray and Dejongh Borchardt answering most of the questions), and the night’s champions, the Cheetahs, led by this season’s Free State Currie Cup coach, Naka Drotske.

So, Cheetahs and Sharks for the final, with Boland just missing out? Unlikely, but with the majority of Boks out for the domestic season, the odd surprise or two won’t be out of the question. The rugby gets underway June 22, and while a little tournament in France will command the majority of attention, last year’s free flowing competition, sans national players, suggests more of the same is on the cards for 2007.
