Mighty Dodos stay top
There was never any doubt that Saturday would be halcyon for local sports fans, after the day’s biggest clash finished with a victory for South Africa’s favourite celebrity hockey side. Inspired by flying wing Alice Dabrowski (pictured), who shrugged off a heavy night’s training at the Forrester’s Arms High Performance Centre, the Dodos managed a hard-fought 4-3 victory in the Pinelands derby, watched by a crowd of over 17…
…and that means the Dodos are top of the log, three wins and a draw leaving Cape Town’s most chiselled athletic unit unbeaten in 2007. No mean feat, considering the public appearances, sponsor commitments, relentless groupies and punishing training schedule the squad endures on a weekly basis - next week, for instance, Stoney and Maccas will be visiting schools around Cape Town to talk about the danger not balancing jager bombs and suitcases properly, Mike van B, Petal le Grange and The Wall will be signing autographs at Wicus Fourie Motors in Parow, and the whole team will be training at Wada on Thursday night.
Still, it’s the price you pay for celebrity sporting status, and the Dodos take it in their stride. It means they’ll be targets for the rest of the league, but nothing new there. Durbanville at home this coming weekend, rivalling the Super 14 final as the match to watch; Feverpitcher will be at the hockey, and at this rate, the crowd could well tumble into double figures for the second week running. Sport just doesn’t get bigger than the Mighty Dodos.
