Jamieson stars in Mighty Dodos win

In front of a crowd of nearly seven, the Pinelands Mighty Dodos got their season of to a rollicking start, a 3-0 victory highlighted by defensive impregnability, searing pace, and Mike Dabrowski wearing an Alice band. Dabrowski did score a cracker of a goal, almost killing the Mutual ‘keeper in the process, but the flying winger will be known as Alice for the rest of the season. Dodo of the day, though, was Richard Jamieson, the former UCT 1st XI star who got a dream call-up for the Dodos last year, and has re-paid the not insubstantial tranfer fee several times over already.

Dabrowski is stalwart Dodo; at the other end of the experience scale, Rhodes Kent, Murray Ortlepp and Rolo (football has Ronaldo, hockey has Rolo) making their debuts, and Zimbabwean hard man Michael Van Beuningen back after a couple of seasons playing professionally in London. The result is a Dodos team that looks capable of something quite special in 2007 (eleven cases of beer post-mtach only reinforces that perception). Sunday’s papers were full of praise for the Dodos; Tuesday night at Bellville will be an important guage of what Cape Town’s celebrity hockey side is really made of.
