Another triumph for Dungeons
If you’ve ever spent time on a boat at Red Bull Big Wave Africa, the act of surfing madness that plays out of the coast of Hout Bay on an annual basis, you’ll know just how vicious the break at Dungeons (the reef that gives rise to 30 and 40-foot waves) can be. But if Dungeons is foreign turf for you - which is probably most sensible - then the picture above should illustrate just imposing Africa’s biggest surf can be.
The lunatic in picture is Greg Long, and his ride at last year’s Red Bull Big Wave Africa was enough to claim the Billabong XXL ‘Biggest Wave of the Year’ award, at the Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards, dished out in California on Friday. Californian Long is famous for throwing himself into the face of surf not usually seen outside of disaster movies, and his latest tribute is well deserved: the wave he rode at Dungeons in July last year was 65 feet, or just over 20 metres. Picture it for a moment…
Madness? Certainly. Impressive? Without doubt - and if the picture catches your eye, don’t miss this year’s edition of Africa’s big wave adventure for more of the same.
