Van der Saar stars for Chelsea

Not that long ago, a fractured Chelsea side looked to have all but conceded the Premiership title, Manchester United racing into a nine point lead as the Stamford Bridge club fought off rumours of player revolt, an unhappy owner, and Jose Mourinho’s supposed departure. But the Premiership is nothing if not a great platform for drama, as gleeful tabloids attest to on a daily basis, and this season is suddenly wide open again.

And for that, Chelsea have Dutch ‘keeper Edwin van der Saar to thank. The United man gifted Portsmouth two goals on Saturday that leave the Premiership race a three-point affair, with an irresitible clash at Stamford Bridge between first and second looming as a possible decider. (There’s also the possibility of an FA Cup final between the two sides - both are in the semis - and an offchance of a European clash as well.) Expect the psychological battle between Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson to fire up in the coming weeks - and look out for another twist or two before the Premiership comes to an end.
