Absa Cape Epic finally done

If Feverpitcher has been a little quiet over the last few days, then it’s not without reason - a combination of small towns well off the 3G track, and one exhausted editor. And that was without getting anywhere near a bicycle - if you actually rode the race, and crossed the finish line at Lourensford, then you’re an extraordinary athlete (and completely barking mad).

Four years in, and Kevin Vermaak’s mountain biking dream has become a remarkable reality, underlined by the packed grandstands at the finish, riders sweeping in beneath hospitality marquees, with Flat Stanley and Goldfish playing out in the background. Delighted sponsors, slick organisation, saturation media coverage, and an almighty battle for the overall title - mark 2007 down as a landmark year for the Absa Cape Epic, with 2008 already looking absolutely massive.

I did the 50km Vigne-a-vigne in Lourensford on Saturday, and it was brutal! As soon as the heat started building up after 10am everyone started showing serious strain. So I have no idea how these Cape Epic folks manage to ride through semi-arid deserts and searing heat for 9 days… I have loads of respect for everyone who finished, maybe one day I’ll be fit and mad enough to put myself through it!

Oh, and how about a category feed? I want to hear about cycling and F1, but can’t be bothered with the rugby and cricket.
