Santos flex their muscles

In the looming shadow of 2010, the PSL has fallen off the radar from time to time, with the World Cup the sexier product that’s getting all the attention. But the local league has produced some fabulous football this season, led by a rampaging Sundowns team - and the woes of Pirates and Chiefs have added further drama to the PSL year.

Less likely to grab the headlines, however, the opening of a gym in Cape Town - but it’s an opening that does have importance beyond just getting the Santos squad in top shape. The performance centre is backed by Engen, and is another quiet illustration that corporate South Africa is putting money into the game outside of the World Cup spotlight.

Santos have struggled in the past with sponsorship, despite having won the PSL title a few seasons ago, but in Engen they’ve found a partner clearly committed to the local game - and that’s an example the rest of corporate South Africa will hopefully take heed of.
