Jordy Smith’s big night

The announcement was made last year, so we all knew he was getting it - but it was still a buzz to see Jordy Smith confirmed as the ASP Tour’s Men’s Junior World Champion for 2006. The teenage surfer had a dream year last year, confirming to the surfing world what we’ve all known in South Africa for a few years know: that Smith is quite simply an extraordinary talent on the waves. Welded to breaks, gliding across tubes, and carrying off an air of laidback majesty in the company of surfing’s established big names - Jordy Smith has arrived in the big time, and the 2006 title confirms that emphatically. Don’t expect it to be the last.
