David George joins the Giro

The Giro del Capo (cycling sounds way cooler in Italian) is underway in Cape Town this week, leading up to the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour on Sunday. The 35 000-strong race will have some serious cyclists amongst the enthusiastic amateurs, and one of them is a man in new colours: David George, signed up by CSC, and adding further depth to this week’s Giro.

Team Barloworld really took local cycling up a gear with the introduction of their European professionals to Cape Town’s marquee week of cycling, but other teams are following suit, and so George joins the man he shared the 2006 South African Cyclist of the Year Award with (Tour de France regular Robbie Hunter) in a tough Giro field. He’s a strong signing for CSC, and underlines the battle that should unfold over the Giro this week; Sunday’s race is the big one, certainly, but the pedigree of the Giro just keeps getting stronger.
