Roger Federer’s selling his fridge

No, times aren’t hard for the world number one - and they’re unlikely to be, given his stranglehold on men’s tennis that his is building him a solid fortune (another title in Dubai at the weekend, plus a record stint at the head of the rankings, overtaking Jimmy Connors’ mark). So why has Federer put his fridge up for auction?

Son of a South African mother, Federer has a charity, IMBEWU, based in Port Elizabeth, and the fridge is a fundraising initiative running through eBay, with Indesit donating a further sum of money (ten times the number of ranking points Federer accrued in 2006) to the Roger Federer Foundation.

A giant Indesit tennis racquet has been built into the fridge door, and the appliance is autographed by Federer - and until March 12, you can place bids for a unique addition to your kitchen. And it’ll go perfectly with the Rafael Nadal microwave and Lleyton Hewitt pop-up toaster…
