Superhero cyclist

The next Lance Armstrong…

…and certainly full of superhero intentions. The little cyclist in picture was taking part in the kids’ version of the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour, with the full version next weekend unleashing 35 000 riders on Cape Town. It’s a spectacular event, and the Mother City has been awash with lycra and luminous helmets for the past couple of months, in anticipation of the big race.

And there’ll be the biggest name yet nestled in the peleton: Miguel Indurain took part a few years ago, but in 2007 one Jan Ullrich is set to join the Tour. Recently retired from cycling proper, he’s found his way to Cape Town, and will set off for the first time in the world’s biggest timed cycle race. The little ones have mastered the opening salvoes of this year’s race, and the Giro del Capo unfolds during the week to follow; the big one is at the weekend, though, so keep an eye out for a swathe of riders across Cape Town, and in particular, a rather well-known German.
