Sharks’ late salvation

99 times out of 100, Odwa Ndungane would have faced a lifetime of therapy, images of a rugby ball slipping cruelly from his grasp flashing through his mind for years to come, fractured dreams ending in moments of cold sweat in the small hours of the morning…

But every so often, that 100th occasion allows last-ditch salvation, and an unforgettable moment that not only erases the earlier moment, but creates a legend that won’t die out any time soon. In virtual slow motion, Ndungane’s swan dive to the corner to set up Pienaar’s heart-stopping conversion made for a defining moment for Ndungane, for Pienaar, for Sharks fans - and quite possibly this year’s Super 14. And if you still can’t quite believe it, imagine how it feels to be Odwa Ndungane this morning.

What a game! Unibrow Pienaar looked as cool as a cucumber. Does the man have a heartbeat?
