Pro20 starts with a bang

In the blur of World Cup build-up, the Standard Bank Pro20 almost arrived unnoticed; Friday night at The Wanderers ensured it’ll get plenty of attention, Caribbean tournament notwithstanding. After Adam Bacher’s 85 led the Cobras to 181, the Lions stuttered to 120 for six after 15 over their 20 overs, and seemingly dead and buried. But the 438 game is a reminder that strange things can happen at The Wanderers…

…and so it went again, Justin Ontong playing the Herschelle Gibbs role with an astonishing 43 off 21 balls to somehow burgle a two-wicket victory off the last ball of the match. Alan Dawson conceded 12 off the final over to spark wild celebration at a packed Wanderers, and give Neil McKenzie’s team a most unlikely win - and remind the rest of us that there’s a most entertaining domestic cricket fix to tide us through to the World Cup.
