Best dressed at the J&B Met
Most of the papers focused on Pocket Power winning the big race, but the horses are pretty peripheral come the J&B Met (and on Saturday, most sports addicts were either at the Athlone Stadium watching Chiefs sneak past Ajax 1-0, or at Newlands watching the third Test). No, the big issue at the Met is fashion - and there are usually sports stars aplenty competing in the sartorial stakes.
2007 was no exception. Francois Pienaar’s tight trousers/tighter t-shirt combo was forgettable. Brent Russell was swathed in linen (Hilton Weiner’s children’s range), Breyton Paulse stuck to his suit and trilby trademark, and Herschelle Gibbs… well, the less said here the better. There were some fashion triumphs, though, and none more so than Pinelands Mighty Dodos hockey stars Dan Nicholl and Big Lurker Fleming, sporting Hazard Originals from golf’s most eclectic fashion label. Look out for it come the end of February - and for the Mighty Dodos, post-Met success, making 2007 a stellar year of hockey.
