Great expectations

The blaze of publicity that has been the return of Robert Skinstad to local rugby has grabbed most of the attention in Durban - and Francois Steyn is probably quite happy. Barely out of his teens, Steyn has a Super 14 ahead of him that will bring great scrutiny on the one genuine success story from last year’s Springbok tour. There’s plenty of competition for fullback (Monty, Mzwandile Stick) and flyhalf (Butch James, Bradley Barrett), but Dick Muir has a special talent on his hands. The last young number 10 sprung on Springbok rugby, Meyer Bosman, has hardly gone stratospheric, and so of all the young talents lining up for a crack at Super 14, Steyn will be watched most closely of all. This could just be a special season for the Sharks; a flourishing Steyn would go a long way in lighting up Durban this season.
