White out?

Final days?

As it stands, Jake White is still on his way back to South Africa this week, for what should be a fun-filled few hours in front of the Presidents Council, a grandiose collection of brandy-swilling blazers who fulfill a role no one can quite put a finger on.

But Saturday’s win could put a slightly different spin on what was expected to be a curt goodbye to White; beating England at Twickenham with half the regular side back at home (and with the existence of fetchers in the game finally acknowledged by the coach) raises the spectre of a Springbok team that might just be emerging from a difficult year.

All of which is most inconvenient for the Presidents Council: do they follow through with a R20-million sacking (the estimated cost of paying off Jake and his coaching team), or do they stick with a man they were itching to be rid of late last week? Oh to be a fly on the wall come that meeting…
