Big heart, big spender

The ATP website reckons Michael Stich racked up US$12.5-million over his career; roughly R100-million at current rates. Which makes R500 000 a relative fraction; still, a fair sum to chip in to charity on the spur of the moment.

Which is exactly what the former Wimbledon champion did at the Nelson Mandela Invitational.
Instead of joining the auction, and coughing up money in a more conventional manner, Stich pledged his half million with no prompting, bumping up the NMI coffers considerably.

Sports star of the week? No question; good man, Mr Stich.
